Introduction

Facing History and Ourselves is a course that was created by a man by the name of Gregory Gallagher. He has gone down many successful career paths in his life and ultimately decided that he found happiness in teaching students. Mr. Gallagher is the person who brought this course to Westborough High School for seniors but hopes for it to be opened to juniors.
The Facing History and Ourselves was created almost four years ago and it is a semester long, half year course. This course is aimed at teaching students about what it is that really took place during the Holocaust. At the beginning of the course we discuss identity and the fact that this is all about discovering who you are as a person. As the course progresses we watched movies that would span over a couple of days, sometimes we would discuss them but there were also times that we wouldn’t. After every movie we would go online to a blog which Mr. Gallagher had set up and the entire class would comment on what it was that we had watched. Many of the movies and things that we saw were hard to look at; I know that for me there were times when I had to look away.
During one of the first few days of the course Mr. Gallagher asks every student “Who are you?” and we did several different activities based around that but this course is about figuring out who you really are and I found out a lot about myself. I have always been the kind of person that is outgoing and I always put other people before myself but this reinforced that. Seeing the horror of the Holocaust cause me to be even more caring and empathetic. I could never imagine people treating other human beings in the manner that they did and as if they are worthless. I am a person that will always be aware of what is going on in the world and even more so now. This course really makes you think and its one of those classes that you simply have to take as a senior. I took this course to become aware; learn about the Holocaust and find out more about who I am and that’s exactly what I got from it.
